The Manual Separation Process
Traditional manual separation requires extensive Photoshop knowledge and follows these tedious steps:
Step 1: Color Analysis (15-20 min)
Manually identify all unique colors in your design. Use the eyedropper tool to sample colors, create a color palette, and determine which colors can be combined or need separate screens.
Step 2: Channel Creation (20-30 min)
Create alpha channels for each ink color. Use selection tools (magic wand, color range, quick selection) to isolate specific colors. Refine edges, clean up selections, and save each as a separate channel.
Step 3: Underbase Design (15-25 min)
Manually paint white underbase where needed. Determine which areas require full white, which need partial white, and adjust for proper ink density and opacity on dark garments.
Step 4: Trapping & Choking (10-15 min)
Apply manual trapping to prevent registration gaps. Expand or contract channel selections to create overlaps, ensuring colors meet properly on press without white gaps showing through.
Step 5: Export & Halftones (15-20 min)
Export each channel as a separate grayscale file. Import into RIP software to apply halftones, set screen angles, adjust LPI, and generate final film or DTF output.
