Getting Started
1.1 What Is InkSplit
InkSplit is a full separation suite for screen-printing. It runs entirely in your web browser and produces print-ready color separations for simulated-process, spot-color, CMYK process, and DTF (direct-to-film) workflows. InkSplit also includes an optional built-in RIP for halftone screening, EPS/DCS export, PNG ZIP export, an ink library, project saving, and a credit-based billing system.
1.2 Accounts & Tiers
You can explore InkSplit without an account, but saving, downloading, and running full separations require a logged-in user. New sign-ups receive 20 free starter credits. Paid tiers (Creative, Studio, Print Pro) provide monthly recurring credits and unlock features like custom inks, the built-in RIP, and unlimited downloads.
1.3 Supported File Types
Upload PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP, or SVG. The maximum file size is 50 MB. SVGs are rasterized to PNG automatically. Images larger than 4000px on their longest side are scaled down; large files may be re-encoded to WebP to keep processing fast.
1.4 Desktop vs Mobile
The full separation workspace is optimized for desktop. A mobile-friendly layout is available, but for the richest editing experience (channel operations, RIP, fine brush work) a desktop browser is recommended.
Uploading an Image
3.1 Upload Card
From the Color Separator home screen, drag-and-drop an image onto the upload card or click SELECT IMAGES to choose from your device. Multiple files can be selected; multi-file uploads are batch-created as separate projects and you are sent to the Projects page.
Drag & Drop or Select Images
PNG · JPG · GIF · WEBP · SVG · 50MB max
3.2 Format & Size Handling
SVG is rasterized to PNG at up to 3000px. PNG/JPG/GIF/WEBP over 4000px are scaled down to 4000px on the longest side. Files over 10MB may be re-encoded to WebP at a reduced quality to speed up processing.
3.3 Project Auto-Save
When logged in, every uploaded image creates a Project record automatically, seeded with your saved defaults so the separation starts the way you like.
3.4 Join InkSplit Prompt
If you try to upload without being logged in, a prompt offers 20 free starter credits and sends you to sign up.
The Separation Workspace
4.1 Layout Overview
The desktop workspace is split into three columns: the Original image panel and Print Preview panel on the left, the Channels list spanning the bottom, and the Separation Settings panel on the right. On mobile these stack vertically.
4.2 Original Panel
Shows your source image over the chosen shirt color. The PROJECT NAME input lets you rename the project. The SAVE button persists your current separation and settings.
4.3 Print Preview Panel
Displays the live composited print simulation. Status indicators show Loading / Ready / No data. A green dot means the composite is ready.
4.4 Processing Overlay
During separation, upscaling, trimming, super-prep, or EPS export, a full-screen overlay shows a spinning InkSplit logo, the current processing stage, progress percentage, an estimated time remaining, and rotating tips.
Original Image Tools
5.1 Upload New Image
Clears the current project and returns to the upload card. Use this to start over without leaving the workspace.
5.2 Remove Colors (Knockout)
A dropdown that removes a chosen color from the image before separation. Pick a preset color or enter a custom hex, adjust the tolerance slider, then click to knockout. Undo/Redo arrows step through knockout history.
5.3 Trim
Crops away empty transparent margins around the artwork so separation plates are tight. Useful before EPS export if your RIP has trouble parsing oversized canvases.
5.4 Upscale
Enlarges the image up to 4000px on its longest side for higher-resolution separations and downloads.
5.5 Super Prep
Runs an image-preparation pass that cleans and prepares the artwork for a cleaner separation. Combine with Trim and Upscale for difficult source files.
5.6 Dimension Readout
Displays the current working image dimensions in pixels (width x height).
Print Preview Controls
6.1 Reset View (Maximize)
Fits the composite to the preview panel. Also re-fits automatically on window resize.
6.2 Lock / Unlock Zoom
When locked (magnifier icon), zoom and pan are disabled so you cannot accidentally scroll away. When unlocked (open-padlock icon), you can scroll-wheel to zoom and drag to pan. A tutorial tip appears if you scroll while locked.
6.3 Magic Wand
Opens the wand tool popover. Click in the preview to select pixels within a tolerance. Toggle Contiguous to limit selection to connected regions. Shift-click adds to the selection; Alt-click subtracts.
6.4 Selection Tools (Lasso / Rectangle / Ellipse)
Cycles through lasso, rectangle, and ellipse selection tools. Use the Invert Selection button (to its right) to invert the active selection. Selections constrain eraser, brush, and channel operations to the masked area.
6.5 Toggle Selection Visibility
Shows or hides the green selection outline without clearing the selection.
6.6 Clear Selection
Removes the active selection mask entirely.
6.7 Preview Gamma
A slider in the preview toolbar that boosts the base plate's visibility in the composite (like a highlight emphasis). Useful for judging underbase strength.
6.8 Resolution Toggle
Switches between Full Res and Low Res rendering. Low Res uses pixelated rendering for speed; Full Res smooths the composite.
Eraser & Brush Tools
7.1 Eraser
Removes ink from selected channels. Pick which channels to affect using the checkboxes on each channel card (or the channel selector in the toolbar), then paint to erase. Size, Opacity, Shape (circle/square/cross), and Hardness are adjustable.
7.2 Brush
Adds ink back to selected channels. Same controls as the eraser, plus an Overlay option that only paints where ink already exists, protecting empty areas.
7.3 Undo / Redo
Dedicated Undo and Redo buttons in the mobile toolbar, plus Ctrl/Cmd+Z (undo) and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z (redo) on desktop. Eraser and brush strokes share the same history stack.
7.4 Cut / Copy / Paste
Toolbar buttons (and Ctrl/Cmd+C / X / V) let you copy, cut, and paste channel alpha between channels. Combined with the selection tools this enables precise channel surgery.
7.5 Active-Channel Checkboxes
On each channel card, a checkbox toggles whether that channel is a target for the eraser/brush. If none are checked, the checkbox flashes lime to remind you to pick at least one.
Separation Settings Panel
8.1 Garment & Base
Collapsible section with shirt color presets and a custom color picker, plus the BASE on/off switch and base type controls.
8.2 Shirt Color
Six preset swatches (white, black, gray, navy, red, green) plus a custom picker. The shirt color drives underbase strength and the preview background.
8.3 Base On/Off
Master switch for the underbase plate. Turn off for white or light garments that do not need a base.
8.4 Base Type
Tone generates a tonal underbase that follows image lightness; Solid creates a 100% flat base wherever artwork exists. (Contrast and AI are legacy options routed to the tonal/solid generators.)
8.5 Base Softness
Controls the falloff curve of the tonal base. Lower values give a lighter base; higher values a heavier base.
8.6 Base Contrast
Adjusts midtone contrast of the tonal base for more or less punch in the underbase.
8.7 Base Choke (px)
Shrinks the base plate inward by the chosen pixel count so white does not peek at the edges during printing. Auto-increases for very large images.
8.8 Base Preview
A live thumbnail of the underbase over the shirt color. Click to enlarge it in a modal at full resolution.
Advanced Settings
9.1 Smart Black
Reduces black-ink coverage where chromatic inks are strong, preventing muddy overprints. Disabled in CMYK mode.
9.2 Black Gamma
A gamma curve applied only to the black channel's halftone to control how its midtones print.

Glossary
- Alpha
- The transparency channel of an image. In InkSplit, each separation plate is an alpha mask: white (opaque) means ink prints, black (transparent) means no ink.
- Base / Underbase
- A white (or light) plate printed first so subsequent colors appear bright on dark garments. InkSplit generates Tone, Solid, and Contrast bases.
- Base Choke
- Shrinking the base plate inward by a pixel count so the white base does not peek beyond the color edges during printing.
- Blend Mode
- How layers combine in the preview. Simulated process uses multiply; CMYK uses normal; highlight uses screen.
- Channel
- A single ink plate in a separation. Each channel has a name, hex color, alpha mask, and position in the print order.
- Chroma Protect
- A highlight-white setting that reduces highlight ink where chromatic colors are strong, keeping highlights in near-white areas only.
- CMYK Process
- A four-color separation (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) used for full-color photographic printing.
- Credits
- InkSplit's unit of usage. Running and downloading separations costs credits; starter grants, monthly allocations, purchased top-offs, and referral bonuses all add credits.
- DCS / EPS
- Desktop Color Separation Encapsulated PostScript - a multi-plate format for importing separations into Photoshop and RIPs.
- Delta E (dE2000)
- A perceptual color-difference formula (CIEDE2000) InkSplit uses to match extracted colors to ink library entries and to assign pixels to inks.
- DTF
- Direct-to-Film. InkSplit exports a solid white base plus the color image, optionally flipped for transfer printing.
- Dot Gain
- The spreading of ink on paper/fabric. InkSplit's halftone dot-gain setting compensates so on-press results match the preview.
- Gamma
- A curve that shifts midtones. Halftone gamma affects midtone intensity; black gamma affects the black channel only; preview gamma boosts the base in the composite.
- GCR / UCR
- Gray Component Replacement and Under Color Removal - CMYK techniques that replace neutral CMY components with black ink to reduce total ink.
- Halftone
- Converting continuous tone into dots of varying size for screen printing. InkSplit's RIP applies halftone screens at chosen LPI, DPI, angle, and dot shape.
- Highlight White
- An optional white plate added last to boost the brightest whites and pops in a design, distinct from the underbase.
- Ink Blending
- A slider controlling how much spot inks blend into each other during simulated-process separation. Lower equals crisper, higher equals smoother/photographic.
- Ink Library
- The collection of named inks (Pantone defaults plus your custom inks) used for color matching and manual palette selection.
- Knockout
- Removing a color from the source image before separation using the Remove Colors tool.
- Lasso / Selection
- Tools that define a masked region (lasso, rectangle, ellipse, or magic wand) so edits and operations apply only inside it.
- LPI / DPI
- Lines per inch (halftone frequency) and dots per inch (output resolution) used by the RIP.
- Mesh Count
- The screen mesh threads per inch recommended for a plate. InkSplit suggests meshes per channel based on base type, separation mode, and blending.
- Pristine Mask
- The original, unedited alpha mask for a channel saved right after separation. Undo/redo and slot switching restore from pristine copies.
- Print Order
- The sequence channels print in. Top of the list prints first; bottom prints last. InkSplit auto-computes a recommended order.
- Profiles
- Saved color palettes you can reuse. InkSplit recommends the closest preset and lets you save your own (tier-limited).
- RIP
- Raster Image Processor. InkSplit's built-in RIP converts separations into halftoned film with registration marks.
- Simulated Process
- A separation technique using spot inks with blending to reproduce photographic/continuous-tone images, more controllable than CMYK on press.
- Smart Black
- A setting that reduces black ink coverage where chromatic inks are strong to avoid muddy overprints.
- Solo
- Isolating one channel in the preview to inspect it without the others.
- Solver Mode
- How tightly the engine groups similar colors before solving: Exact (smooth gradients), Detailed, Balanced, or Fast (draft, may posterize).
- Spot Color
- A specific premixed ink printed as a solid color, typically with low blending for bold graphic work.
- Super Prep
- An image-preparation pass that cleans artwork for a cleaner separation.
- Tonal Base
- An underbase whose strength follows image lightness - more base under light areas, less under dark - controlled by Softness and Contrast.
- Trim
- Cropping away transparent margins around artwork so plates are tight and EPS files parse cleanly.
- Upscale
- Enlarging the source image up to 4000px for higher-resolution separations and downloads.
