Understanding CMYK Screen Printing
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is the industry-standard method for reproducing full-color images in screen printing. Unlike spot color printing which requires a separate screen for each color, CMYK uses just four screens with halftone patterns to create thousands of colors.
Key Benefits of CMYK Separation:
- →Photo Reproduction: Perfect for photographic images and complex gradients
- →Cost Effective: Only four screens needed regardless of color count
- →Quick Turnaround: Faster setup than multiple spot color screens
- →Unlimited Colors: Create any color visible to the human eye
CMYK vs Other Separation Methods
| Method | Screens | Best For | Garment Colors |
|---|---|---|---|
| CMYK | 4 screens | Photos, gradients | White/light only |
| Simulated Process | 4-8 screens | Photos on dark | Any color |
| Spot Color | 1-6 screens | Vector art, logos | Any color |
Technical Requirements for CMYK Printing
Mesh Selection
Use 230-305 mesh count screens for CMYK.
- • 230 mesh: Good for general CMYK work
- • 305 mesh: Better detail, needs precise registration
Halftone Settings
Proper LPI and angles prevent moiré:
- • 35-45 LPI for 230 mesh
- • 45-65 LPI for 305 mesh
- • Use standard angles (C:105°, M:75°, Y:90°, K:45°)
Ink Selection
Use process inks specifically formulated for CMYK:
- • Water-based for soft hand
- • Plastisol low-bleed for polyester
- • Discharge for ultra-soft vintage feel
Print Order
Standard print sequence for best results:
- • Yellow (lightest, least visible)
- • Cyan
- • Magenta
- • Black (last for maximum detail)
